PROBLEMS associated with the water-cooled systems :

PROBLEMS CAUSED BY SCALE OR FOULING DEPOSITS ONTO HEAT EXCHANGE SURFACES

Uneven heat transfer and unexpected equipment shutdown ¨C Loss of production
Shortened equipment life
Equipment corrosions
Increased pumping cost
Profits Loss

ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS RELATED TO SCALING & FOULING IN HEAT EXCHANGERS
Breeding ground for Legionella bacteria
Discharge of cooling water impregnated with chemicals can cause water pollution
Increase in power consumption worsens global warming

CONVENTIONAL SOLUTION

Manual Cleaning Using Brush & Rod :
Involves chiller shutdown
Costly & labour intensive
Oversized brush is potentially damaging to heat exchanger tubes
Undersized brush is not effective in removing crystalized fouling
Close supervision is required to ensure that every single heat exchanger tube is properly cleaned
Visual inspection of heat exchanger tubes does not ensure complete removal of scale formation

Chemical Cleaning Using Corrosive Chemicals :
Less labour-intensive than using brush and rod
Potential damaging to the copper heat exchanger tubes if the concentration is too high or the soaking duration is too long
Oversized brush is potentially damaging to heat exchanger tubes
Ineffective in removing the scale and fouling deposits if the concentration is too low or duration is too short
Discharge of spent corrosive chemicals into sewers or drains
